Join South Australia's astronomy community
ASSA membership is open to people of all ages and professions. The only prerequisite is an interest in astronomy.
It does not matter how much you know about astronomy or any other science. The Society has something for everyone, from people just starting out through to experienced observers, imagers, researchers and citizen scientists. You do not need to own a telescope to join or take part.
ASSA currently has more than 650 members from many walks of life. Members include social astronomers, armchair astronomers, amateur astronomers, professional scientists, engineers and technicians, citizen scientists, comet observers and families who simply enjoy observing the Universe with their eyes, binoculars or telescopes.

What membership includes
Viewing nights and observing sites
Members can attend Society viewing nights free of charge. Member viewing nights are held at ASSA observing sites including Stockport Observatory, Tooperang Hall and Meldanda in the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.
The Bulletin
ASSA members receive the Society's monthly newsletter, The Bulletin, containing club activities, current astronomical news, observing notes, articles and event information.
Special Interest Groups
Members can join Special Interest Groups covering astro-imaging, variable stars, radio astronomy, comets, occultations, meteors and asteroids, technology, and other astronomy interests.
Library and resources
Members can borrow from an extensive collection of astronomical books and DVDs, and read magazines and newsletters from other astronomy clubs.
ASSA-Chat and online forums
Members are welcome to join ASSA-Chat, the Society's internal mailing list, and other online discussion spaces. These are useful ways to ask questions, share information and connect with other members.
Dark-sky astro camps
Several times a year, camps are held in the Flinders Ranges and other dark-sky locations around South Australia. These give members access to clear air, dark skies, observing, imaging, bushwalking and other activities.
Telescope loan program
ASSA members who do not own a telescope may be eligible to borrow a Society telescope on a short-term loan. The nominal loan term is three months.
Telescope clinics and workshops
Members can attend telescope clinics and practical astronomy workshops covering topics such as buying and using a telescope, observing the night sky and getting started in astrophotography.
Retailer discounts
Members can obtain discounts from a number of retailers, including Adelaide Optical Centre, BinTel and Sidereal Trading. Ask for the ASSA member discount when ordering and be prepared to provide your membership number.
Seminars and conventions
Seminars are periodically run by ASSA for members. Members can also attend the National Convention of Amateur Astronomers, a bi-annual event hosted by a different Australian astronomical society each time.
ASSA merchandise
Members can purchase a variety of products for sky watchers, including ASSA-branded baseball caps, beanies and badges.
Share the experience
Membership is a way to share your interest and experience with like-minded people. There is no better way to enjoy the science and beauty of astronomy than with others who enjoy it too.
