Astronomical Anniversaries 2018

Presented by Steven Raine, Astronomical Society of South Australia

From the detection of stellar parallax by Bessel, to the questionable patenting of the newly invented telescope, from Mirzam varying slightly to the whopping massive blast over Tunguska, from a Phoenix landing on a Martian polar cap to Apollo 8’s capture of Earthrise; 2018 boasts some remarkable astronomical anniversaries. Come along and Steven Raine will discuss some of these significant places, people and history commemorating their decadal anniversaries this year showing how we’ve progressed and learnt through the ages and through some remarkable work by some fascinating people and some of the sights we’ve seen over centuries.

Bio: Inspired by the 1989 ‘Voyager-II’ fly-past of Neptune, Stevo Raine has been an ASSA and Supernovas Planetarium Group member since 1992. He has written for 'Sky & Space' magazine having three items published there and also writes Science Fiction, a little of which has been published as well as being a contestant on the ABC-TV quiz show ''The Einstein Factor’ in 2009. Steven is owned by a cat called 'Zosma' after the star Delta Leonis and a 9 year old kelpie named (but not by him) Chokko.
