Online Star Party: Summer 2021

First ASSA Online Star Party

Watch Live on YouTube or Facebook starting 8pm ACDT Saturday 20 February 2021.

The public is invited to join the Astronomical Society of South Australia for a unique real-time tour of the Universe from the comfort of their own home. The event is free of charge and is suitable for viewers of all ages regardless of their knowledge of the night sky.

The star party will feature a live stream of real-time images of the night sky over southern Australia using an array of advanced telescopes in the Greater Adelaide area. Starting with the Moon, viewers will see closeup images of lunar craters and mountains, the Apollo 11 landing site and witness a lunar occultation. We will then start our journey into deep space to view colourful nebulae containing stellar nurseries, brilliant star clusters scattered across the Milky Way, glowing shells of gas ejected by ageing stars, supernova remnants from stars that exploded, distant swirling galaxies, and even a quasar as we peer deep into the limits of the observable Universe.

The ASSA Online Star Party will use some of the latest real-time telescope imaging technologies to ensure a unique and exciting experience for viewers in South Australia and beyond. A panel will be your guide and answer questions throughout the evening. Viewers can email questions ahead of the Online Star Party.

This is ASSA's first Online Star Party and the special event is free of charge for everyone. It is being held in place of the quarterly public Stockport Star Party which cannot proceed at this time due to COVID-19 safety restrictions.

Prizes & Raffle Tickets

The sponsors of our first Online Star Party -- Sky-Watcher Australia and Adelaide Optical Centre -- have kindly donated two prize packages to help the Society raise funds to promote the science of Astronomy in South Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Two raffle draws will take place during the Online Star Party to select the winners.

Members of the Astronomical Society of South Australia have shared their knowledge and views of the Universe with the public since 1892. Funds raised through the sale of raffle tickets will enable the Society to buy specialist equipment and services so we can continue to provide a rich, engaging and safe non-contact experience for the public during COVID-19 and beyond.

Tickets are available to purchase until 9:00pm ACDT 20 February 2021. THIS RAFFLE HAS NOW ENDED -- Prize Winners
