The Astronomical Society of South Australia was founded in 1892 and is the
oldest society of its kind in Australia. It is the only representative body for
amateur astronomy in the state of South Australia.
The objectives of the Society are to promote the Science of Astronomy
and all its branches. It does this by holding regular
meetings and
viewing nights, circulating current
astronomical information, and encouraging popular interest in Astronomy.
The Society occupies a number of permanent observatories in South Australia that
house some of the largest telescopes in the state, and can bring smaller
telescopes to schools and groups venues.
Membership benefits
Membership is open to people of all ages and
professions - the only prerequisite is an interest in Astronomy. At present,
the Society has nearly 500 active members.
Members enjoy many benefits, including a monthly
newsletter, free access to all of the Society's viewing nights,
discounts on astronomical publications and magazines, and much more!
Members can also borrow books, DVDs and other items from an extensive
astronomical library, subscribe to the on-line
mailing list, participate in
workshops and training, and attend
camps.
The Society has a number of regional branches that
regularly hold meetings and viewing nights in their local area. Each branch
has a number of assorted telescopes. Members can also join any of the
Society's interest groups and engage in relevant
activities or observations.
