Membership

Membership to the Astronomical Society of South Australia is open to people of all ages and professions. The only prerequisite is an interest in Astronomy. At present the Society has approximately 500 members.

  • Free Entry to Astronomical Viewing Nights
  • ASSA members can attend any of the Society's viewing nights free of charge. Viewing nights exclusively for ASSA members are held each month at the Stockport Observatory, Tooperang observing site, Whyalla and the Northern York Penninsula.

  • Stay Informed with The Bulletin
  • ASSA members receive a 20-page newsletter each month to keep them informed on current astronomical news and events.

  • ASSA-Chat Internet Mailing List Restricted Access
  • ASSA members are welcome to join ASSA-Chat, the Society's own Internet mailing list. With over 100 subscribers, this is an extremely useful resource.

  • Discounts on Astronomical Publications
  • ASSA members can subscribe to Australian Sky & Telescope magazine for $59.50 for 11 issues (almost 15% off the normal subscription and nearly 30% off the cover price). Members can also subscribe to U.S. Sky & Telescope at a discount of US$15 off the yearly subscription rate as well as receiving a 10% discount on all Sky Publishing products.

  • Astronomical Yearbook
  • ASSA members can purchase Astronomy 2010 at a special discounted ASSA price.

  • Special Interest Groups
  • ASSA members can join in the activities of a number of special interest groups run by the Society. Active groups include Astrophotography, Deep Sky Observing, Variable Stars Group, CCD Imaging and Minor Planet Occultations.

  • The Astronomical Library
  • ASSA members can borrow from an extensive collection of astronomical books and read magazines and newsletters from other astronomy clubs.

  • Telescope Clinics
  • ASSA members can have their telescopes tuned and serviced at our hands-on telescope clinics, held several times a year. For beginners, basic training and "how-to" tips are provided by our more experienced members.

  • Telescope Loan Programme
  • Don't have your own telescope? No worries! The Society runs a telescope loan programme with a variety of different size and types of telescopes available for hire to members.

  • Dark Sky Astrocamps
  • Several times a year, camps are held in the Flinders Ranges and other dark sky locations around South Australia for ASSA members. These are a great opportunity to do some astronomy from amazingly clear air and dark skies, coupled with bushwalking and other activities.

  • Seminars & Conventions
  • Seminars are run by ASSA for its members every two years. Members can also attend the National Convention of Amateur Astronomers - a bi-annual event hosted by a different Australian astronomical society each year.

  • Astrophotography Workshops
  • ASSA members are eligible to attend free workshops to learn the the basic principles of astrophotography and how to take their own photos. The workshop includes taking photos through the Stockport 20-inch telescope.

  • Amateur Telescope Making
  • Build your own telescope! These sessions are conducted if there is sufficient interest at the time.

  • Share the Experience
  • Share your interest and experience with other like-minded people. There is no better way to enjoy the wonderful science of Astronomy. Join us now!

Membership fees

From as little as $30 per year, you can receive all the membership benefits. There are no joining fees. ASSA has two different classes of membership:

  • Full Membership - $55
  • Adult, family, school or other institution (family/institution receives one vote).

  • Concession Membership - $40
  • Children under 18, full-time student, pensioner, unemployed or country location (>40km from the Adelaide GPO).

Elect to receive The Bulletin electronically and receive a $10 discount from your total annual membership subscription

Annual membership fees are due on the 1st January each year. Members joining after 1st July pay half the membership rate for the balance of the year (i.e. $27.50 or $20 for Full Membership or Concession Membership respectively). Half of the discount (i.e. $5) is applied for receiving The Bulletin electronically after 1st July.

  • Because we try to keep costs as low as possible, we do not currently provide credit card facilities.
