Magellanic Cloud Atlases

Produced by Mati Morel, the chief uranographer for the VSS RASNZ, these atlases depict the entire Large and Small Magellanic Clouds down to 14th magnitude; with dozens of nebulae, hundreds of variables and thousands of comparison star magnitudes shown. Additional charts for selected areas go to 16th magnitude.

These atlases are a must-have if you're seriously observing anything in the Clouds!

  • Visual Atlas of the Large Magellanic Cloud (1983, 1991)
Star Atlas for LMC Region. Equinox 1950. 28 page booklet + 7 Master charts. Ids., coords and classifications for LMC clusters and nebulae, and variable stars. V mags for many field stars. $15.00.

  • Visual Atlas of the Small Magellanic Cloud (1989)
Star Atlas for SMC region. Equinox 1950. 30 page booklet and 2 Master charts (scale 60"/mm). Ids., coords and classes for SMC clusters and nebulae, and variable stars. Ten enlarged charts for crowded regions. V mags for many field stars. Standard edition : $20.00; the Master charts (which are large -- 44cm x 58cm) may be laminated before delivery, at an additional cost of $10.00.

  • LMC Selected Areas (1990)
Detailed, large scale charts for complex areas in the LMC. Equinox 1950. 30 charts, scale 5"/mm. NGC objects and variable stars are labelled on each chart. $15.00.
Mati has also compiled some useful listings of data:
  • Stellar Data 1 (1990)
40 pages. Compilation of several directories and catalogues of stars with published UBV data. Two directories list references to UBV sequences in and near star clusters, galaxies and other objects. Two separate compilations of comparison stars for var. stars. Ids., 1950 coords, V mags. Four catalogues of stars for selected portions of the southern sky (Puppis, Vela and Centaurus). Ids. 1950 coords, V mags. $12.00.

  • Stellar Data 2 (1990)
35 pages. Data for 1487 stars in 17 adjacent fields in Puppis. Ids., V mags., MK spectral types, 1950 coords. $12.00.

  • Stellar Data 3 (1993)
Catalogue of Galactic Carbon Stars. An abridged, hardcopy version of the General Catalogue of Cool Galactic Carbon Stars, 2nd ed., 1989, C.B. Stephenson. Only those data fields of interest to non- professional astronomers (i.e. ids, 1900 coords, mags, spectral class, remarks) are listed. 5987 entries. 147 pages. $25.00.
