Lunar Eclipse: Live Stream

Lunar Eclipse: Live Stream -- presented by the ASSA

Watch Live on YouTube or Facebook starting 8:00pm ACDT Friday 19 November 2021.

Over $1,500 in raffle prizes and giveaways on offer during the broadcast!

The public is invited to join the Astronomical Society of South Australia (ASSA) for a special online event to view a live stream of the near-total Partial Lunar Eclipse on Friday 19 November 2021. The live stream is free to watch and is suitable for viewers of all ages regardless of their knowledge of the night sky.

The live stream will feature close-up views of the Moon as it rises into the sky over southern Australia, changing colour as it gradually moves out of the Earth’s shadow. Our network of imaging telescopes located in South Australia, Victoria and Queensland (and further away if necessary) will provide the best opportunity to view this special celestial event regardless of local weather conditions. The live stream will include expert commentary, short presentations and activities curated by a panel of educators, scientists and amateur astronomers to ensure a memorable and unique experience for everyone.

During the eclipse, the Moon will pass almost entirely into the Earth’s shadow creating a beautiful spectacle. From Adelaide, South Australia, the Sun will be setting in the West just as the partially eclipsed Moon is rising in the East, providing a unique local experience. The part of the Moon in eclipse will appear either dark red or orange in colour due to sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere and falling upon the lunar surface – in effect, the light of a thousand sunsets and sunrises on Earth being projected onto the surface of the Moon!

After the eclipse we will point our telescopes elsewhere and share views of the planets Jupiter and Saturn, as well other beautiful celestial objects like colourful nebulae, sparking star clusters, and distant galaxies.

The Lunar Eclipse: Live Stream event is being presented by the ASSA in place of its regular Spring Stockport Star Party, which together with other in-person public viewing nights, have being suspended in South Australia due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over $1,500 in prizes and giveaways (for kids) are on offer, and funds raised from raffle ticket sales will be used by the ASSA to buy equipment to enable future safe non-contact in-person sharing of telescope views with the general public. A series of new style in-person events are planned in 2022 following recent trials.

The event will use some of the latest real-time telescope imaging technologies to ensure a unique and exciting experience for viewers in South Australia and elsewhere. A panel will be your guide and answer questions throughout the evening. Please join us and tell your friends!
